2025 The genetic architecture of and evolutionary constraints on the human pelvic form
Science
Human pelvic evolution after the human-chimpanzee split may have created an obstetrical dilemma—a mismatch between large infant brains and narrow birth canals—though evidence has been mixed. Using deep learning on 31,115 UK Biobank scans, researchers identified 180 genetic loci linked to seven heritable pelvic traits. Birth canal features showed sex-specific genetics aligned with reproduction. Larger canals were tied to slower walking and more hip osteoarthritis but less back pain, while narrower canals reduced pelvic floor disorders but increased obstructed labor risk. Genetic overlap between canal and head size suggests pelvis-brain coevolution that helps ease this trade-off.
